Whenever we talk to people about building or promoting websites, we explain that a website is of only limited use if it can't "be found" by the search engines. In the UK, the most important search engine is Google and the most common question is "how do I get to be top of google". This is down to marketing and, unless you are in an very localised or niche business, won't happen by accident. When we refer to Search Engine Optimisation, or "SEO" we're talking about a range of activities which build up your websites profile over time.

The main point about SEO is that it isn't an instant fix and requires ongoing and consistent effort. One of the most important activities is to publish new content on a regular basis - content which is useful for your site visitors and also tells google more about you, so that is can build a picture of what your website (and therefore your business) is about - your products and services and what you see as most important.

You can do it yourself - or get outside help to create new content - the only sure thing is that you need to do it effectively to make a difference to your search engine rankings. There are other factors - which I'm sure will come up in a future blog entry!
